Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites are a class of materials that find nowadays a lot of application in several demanding fields. Typical applications in the industrial field include tanks, piping systems, shafts and wind turbine blades. Also in the Marine and Shipping industry monolithic or sandwich cored hulls and superstructure components are made of FRPs.
Highly customized structures can be tailor made however this typically adds complexity to inspection. It takes serious knowledge of composites, the construction methods and their behaviour in order to specify the appropriate inspection method. Usually an array of instruments and tools are required in order to be able to assess the extent and kind of damage sustained by FRPs.
